testing done prior to being able to come home from overseas). It can take a couple of weeks. I had a lot of time on my hands to think and a big world ahead of me. I had so many ideas swimming through my head it was hard to choose one and know which way to go. I couldn't focus.
Focus had always been a long time problem of mine so I decided to do something about it before moving forward. I googled Ted Talks Focus and started to watch various people give ideas on how to focus. This was my first answer to the poor guy on Quora.
Ted Talks are a great way to access ideas from the great minds of the world on just about anything you can imagine. I either go to Ted Talks directly and search on YouTube to find what I'm looking for. I simply type in Ted Talks along with the subject matter I'm interested in. Seriously let your mind go wild here. Once you start watching Ted Talks you'll never go back, I promise. In fact, after watching so many I thought I was pretty awesome and submitted my own application to speak at TedX. Unfortunately they weren't ready for my kind of ANNErtainment *shrugs* oh well.
Watching Ted Talks is where I learned the best practical exercise for focus. Lay flat on your stomach (this can be done before falling asleep - it helps with that too!) and focus on your breathing. Focus on the movement of your stomach while you breathe. If you brake focus, catch yourself and return to focusing on the movement of your stomach again. Do this for as long as you can to practice focusing.
I was so excited to have a practical exercise to help me. I was starting to think I had a disease but it ends up that for many, focusing is something that can be learned and attained through mental exercise. With distractions today we need exercises like the one I just described. I suppose you can take that same exercise and apply it to anything you want to focus on. Why not try something fun? Put an object of your choice in front of you and try focusing on it for five minutes straight. Every time your focus is broken, catch yourself and return to it immediately. You will soon become a Master Focus Artist.
I think you got it. I'm excited. This makes me want to do a Youtube on the subject!
Now, returning to this poor guy on Quora, and probably you because you wouldn't be reading this unless you were looking for help focusing too.
(See how I lost focus and brought it back into view right there?)
On a micro level focusing is a mental ability that can be strengthened through exercises for tasks you are trying to complete. I will give other ideas here and be sure to keep reading because on a macro level, if you want to accomplish big things for success, there are deeper reasons people have an inability to focus that can honed in on and changed.
But first, another idea to help you focus is to write the task down you are trying to complete. Just one task - not 101! Writing it is like magic. Your mind conceives it, your hand writes it, your eyes read it. It takes form, it takes shape, poof! Reality is manifested.
Look at you! The Master Focusist already.
Another thing you can do is to see yourself...imagine yourself literally doing it.
You will be surprised when that task gets done even if you didn't focus. Seriously I packed an entire house this way once. When I had finished taping up the last box I wondered how I'd done it. It was an out of body experience - really. (I wasn't taking any drugs for FX, promise).
Lastly, for focusing on immediate tasks you can get an old fashioned timer. This was suggested by another girl on Quora but it's something that I have recommended and used myself. This adorable penguin timer is less than five dollars! The little guy can remind you to focus. Click on him to purchase it through my affiliate and support the morning show. Thank you Amazon!
First, at a Macro level you may be lacking purpose in your life. A given purpose in life will drive you and narrow your vision and focus like an arrow to a target. If you don't have a purpose driving you, something you're chasing after, then allow yourself to dream again and make it happen. A great place to start (of course) is the book Write I Am by me : ) It's a short, practical guide on how to live the life of your dreams and as with all products I suggest or write, it's a practical, simple and efficient catalyst for having abundance.
Another idea for ya, when you can't focus, get silent and get in touch with why. Ask yourself the question, why is this task so daunting? When I've done that I have learned that there is a pattern to the types of tasks that are challenging for me to focus on. One is when I don't know how to do something it's much more challenging to get started and I procrastinate.
Last Jedi Mind trick is to STOP IT! STOP SAYING YOU CAN'T FOCUS! STOP SAYING YOU PROCRASTINATE. Your mind is listening and will obey your command. See? A Jedi mind trick. Believe you can focus and believe you'll complete the task at hand and then you shall be an awesome focuser!
